One on One: Chris Bosh vs Pau Gasol

It's time for another round of "One on One", where we take too similar fantasy basketball players and compare and contrast the two based on the numbers.  All statistics are based on the 2006-2007 season.

Today's matchup:  Chris Bosh vs Pau Gasol

First off, and you'll probably hear me preaching about this a lot, when you're talking about anything fantasy, it's important to communicate how the scoring structure of your league works. For our purposes, I'm going to assume we're talking about rotisserie using Yahoo Fantasy Sport's default scoring system (why? because I think it's the best...that's why). The stat cats being points, rebounds, assists, 3's made, blocks, steals, fg%, ft% and to's.

In roto, you're looking to compare players stat-by-stat, since roto is really designed to level the playing field of statistics (for instance, by roto standards if a player gets about 2 steals per game, it's the equivalent in steals of a player scoring about 20-25 points per game).

So, let's compare stats.

Points per game:

Chris Bosh 22.6

Pau Gasol 20.8

Rebounds per game:

Chris Bosh 10.7
Pau Gasol 9.9

Assists per game:

Chris Bosh 2.5
Pau Gasol 3.4

Blocks:

Chris Bosh 1.3
Pau Gasol 2.1

Steals:

Chris Bosh 0.6
Pau Gasol 0.5

3s made:

Chris Bosh 0.2
Pau Gasol 0.1

FG% (and FG's attempted per game):

Chris Bosh 49.6%/15.2 attempts
Pau Gasol 53.9%/14.5 attempts

FT% (and FT's attempted per game):

Chris Bosh 78.5%/8.2 attempts

Pau Gasol 74.8%/6.8 attempts

Turnovers:

Chris Bosh 2.6
Pau Gasol 2.8

Games played in '06-'07:

Chris Bosh 69
Pau Gasol 59

The Verdict:

Pau Gasol wins.

First, it's important to remember that Gasol had to shake off a lot of rust by coming into the season late.  Yet, he responded by posting solid numbers across the board.  With a healthy start, Gasol should be able to post even better numbers, especially with a healthier squad around him, including a pass-first point guard in Mike Conley and his best friend, a smart sharp-shooting combo guard in Juan Carlos Navarro.

Second, there are some worries about Chris Bosh's knee, so Gasol isn't the only one with injury concern.  Still, Bosh put up some solid numbers himself, gaining an edge over Gasol in points and boards. Bosh fits Toronto's run-n-gun style and he should be able to benefit as second-year prospect Andrea Bargnani continues to improve.  Bargnani is more of a finesse player, much like Bosh, and his shooting ability should complement Bosh well.

However, despite Bosh's slight edge in points and boards, Gasol is the superior passer and, most noteably, has a significant edge in blocks.  That alone makes him more fantasy worthy, as blocks are often what owners should look for in their big men. This is a close call, but the edge goes to Gasol because of his situation this season and because of his edge in blocks.  It might also be relevant to note that Gasol averaged an astounding 4.6 assists per game two seasons ago. Fantasy owners would love for him to repeat that feat.
