One on One: Yao vs Bosh

Today’s Matchup: Yao Ming vs Chris Bosh

Just a reminder, when you're talking about anything fantasy it's important to communicate how the scoring structure of your league works.

For our purposes, I'm going to assume we're talking about rotisserie using Yahoo Fantasy Sport's default scoring system…the stat cats being points, rebounds, assists, 3's made, blocks, steals, fg%, ft% and to's.

In roto, you're looking to compare players stat-by-stat, since roto is really designed to level the playing field of statistics (for instance, by roto standards if a player gets about 2 steals per game, it's the equivalent in steals of a player scoring about 20-25 points per game).

Anyway, let’s compare statistics, shall we? I’m using the 2005-2006 statistics. It’s too early to use 2006-2007 stats.

Yao Ming 85.3% / (6.9 attempts per game)

The Verdict
Chris Bosh wins.

First of all, I think Yao Ming is more of an injury risk at this point. He missed 25 games last season and when he finally recovered to the point where he could practice, he had to practice hard to get ready for the FIBA World Games. At the World Games, he had to play big minutes and got beat on a lot, because China has very few other weapons. He played very well, but I just don’t think he had sufficient healing time for a guy his size with foot problems.

So far this season, Yao’s rebounds are down and his turnovers are up. That’s bad. He’s scoring the ball well and shooting at a high percentage, but so is Chris Bosh.

Bosh has C-eligibility in Yahoo Leagues, so Yao has no advantage there.

Bosh still could stand to block more shots, but Yao hasn’t blocked many shots either this season.

Last year’s numbers were extremely close across the board, but with Yao a bigger injury risk and Bosh’s fast start, I don’t see how you can take Yao Ming over Chris Bosh in your fantasy drafts.

Yao

Yao is and rightfully so the number one option on a team with T-Mac. Its time to start treating him like it. I fully expect 22+ 10, 1.5 blocks and 82 games played with great %s. I love Bosh and he might put up munbers that are on par and maybe even alittle better then Yao on the season but I certinly wouldn't predicted it. It also upsets me that people consider Yao injury prone b/c he missed some time last year (its like people are always looking to cut this guy down). He is fully recovered and prior to last year had missed 2 games in his career. Why would you consider him a risk?

Who Will Sex Dikembe????

Yao cont'd

Well, last year Yao averaged 22.3 ppg, 10.7 rbpg, and 1.7 blocks, so 22, 10 and 1.5 isn't that bold of a prediction. He is certainly on the up and up and should be the number one option in Houston. If I was starting a real NBA team, I'd take Yao over Bosh. However, in fantasy, I'd still go with Bosh. Yao is an injury risk. Does he have a history of being injury prone? No. In fact, he's had a pretty healthy career. But, I worry because of the nature of his off season. 7-6 guys with foot injuries tend to have repeat injuries especially when they don't have proper time to ensure the injury heals. I still say it's just a matter of time, but I hope I'm wrong. The signs just point to it.

Right now Yao's averaging about 27 ppg, 10 rbpg, 2 bspg, and his %s are insane after 7 games. Only TOs are holding him back a little bit, but so far everyone seems to be turning the ball over. Bosh is averaging about 21 ppg, 13.6 rbpg, 1.4 bspg, and not as good % but under half the TOs. The jury is out. This one is extremely close and I'd take either one early.

Yao

I'm saying Yao will get you at least that. I dont think I can say the same for Bosh though he might get you that. I predict yao will get 24.5, 11.5, 2, lead the league in FG%, and plays 82 games. With reagrd to his foot he's healed. With regard to his off season the guy plays basketball. We always get on guys that dont put in the work in the off season but if a guy plays international ball in the off season we expect them to fall apart. I dont get it.

Who Will Sex Dikembe????

Agreed.

I'm definitely with Philthy on this one. And I'm very glad to have Bosh in one of my leagues. Two threes last night!

Yao Bling Bling Ming

I'd still take Yao over Bosh. I just see more upside there. Yeah, ming's not getting the rebounds right now, but he's scoring and his percentages are crazy! also, I don't think the world gams will hurt him that much. I think this is houston's year.

Yao's boards

Well, he sure got the rebounds last night. 17 boards, 7 blocks against the Knicks.

Good assessment

Before I read this I would have picked Yao. Most leagues I am in Yao goes before Bosh. Neither of them block enough shots in my opinion.

yao/bosh

also wasn't Tracy McGrady hurt for a lot of last year? If he is healthy that would take away some stats from Yao and TOronto getting TJ ford helps Bosh.

T-Mac's health risk

Good points.

Excellent

Great points about Yao's healing period.

Chris Bosh is the man

I like Chris Bosh as well. I got him with the 12th pick in a recent 9-cat H2H league. I'm very happy that he added a long range jumper to his repertoire. I paired the Bosh pick with Chris Paul in the 2nd round. I'm currently sitting in 1st place at 9-0-0.

Not a bad combo

But I'd guess the real reason you're doing so well is because you must've had some late round steals or have played the wire well. I actually think Paul could do better as he gets his steals up to last year's pace.

Nice job on your early fast start.
