It's time for another round of "One on One", where we take too similar fantasy basketball players and compare and contrast the two based on the numbers. Normally we don't do two "One on One's" back-to-back, but this one was requested by a reader. All statistics are based on the 2006-2007 season.
Today's matchup: Josh Smith vs Andre Iguodala
First off, and you'll probably hear me preaching about this a lot, when you're talking about anything fantasy, it's important to communicate how the scoring structure of your league works. For our purposes, I'm going to assume we're talking about rotisserie using Yahoo Fantasy Sport's default scoring system (why? because I think it's the best...that's why). The stat cats being points, rebounds, assists, 3's made, blocks, steals, fg%, ft% and to's.
In roto, you're looking to compare players stat-by-stat, since roto is really designed to level the playing field of statistics (for instance, by roto standards if a player gets about 2 steals per game, it's the equivalent in steals of a player scoring about 20-25 points per game).
So, let's compare stats.
Points per game:
Josh Smith 16.4
Andre Iguodala 18.2
Rebounds per game:
Josh Smith 8.6
Andre Iguodala 5.7
Assists per game:
Josh Smith 3.3
Andre Iguodala 5.7
Blocks:
Josh Smith 2.9
Andre Iguodala 0.4
Steals:
Josh Smith 1.4
Andre Iguodala 2.0
3s made:
Josh Smith 0.5
Andre Iguodala 0.6
FG% (and FG's attempted per game):
Josh Smith 43.9%/13.8 attempts
Andre Iguodala 44.7%/13.0 attempts
FT% (and FT's attempted per game):
Josh Smith 69.3%/5.4 attempts
Andre Iguodala 82.0%%/7.3 attempts
Turnovers:
Josh Smith 3.2
Andre Iguodala 3.4
Games played in '07-'08:
Josh Smith 72
Andre Iguodala 76
The Verdict:
Smith wins.
This is a tough one to determine. If you go by this season's stats, Smith wins by a landslide. However, we'll give Iguodala the benefit of the doubt and assume he's only in a slump. It's hard to imagine him shooting sub-70% from the line for an entire season, and it's hard to imagine that he won't pick up the scoring a bit, as well.
Smith is off to a great start in 2007-2008. His 36% from the field hurts, but his 2.7 spg and 3.5 bspg more than makes up for it. Yet, that's not why Smith wins this battle. Smith's biggest advantage stats are boards and blocks, while Iguodala edges Smith out in points, assists, FT% and steals. Yet, it's hard to give Iguodala a major edge in steals when Smith's getting more so far in '07-'08, and with Iguodala's assists down, it's tough to credit him too much with that.
By the end of the season, we might reach a different verdict. But, for now, Smith has to be the choice. Blocks can be very difficult to come by and Smith is great in that department.
